4 Reasons to Choose Steam Cleaning Over Dry Cleaning for Your Carpet

When you want to have your carpets professionally cleaned, you'll generally find yourself choosing between either steam cleaning or dry cleaning.

The difference is easy enough to understand. With steam cleaning, a machine injects hot water into the carpet at high pressure. This hot water breaks up dirt and staining agents. When the water is extracted, all that dirt and grime is extracted along with it. With dry cleaning, a special powder is applied to your carpet to break down dirt and grime, then a high-powered vacuum is used to remove it.

While both options have their own pros and cons, most people are going to find that steam cleaning makes the most sense. Here are just four reasons why.

1. Great for Stubborn Stains

Dry carpet cleaning is going to be somewhat effective against stains, but it tends to struggle with older or more stubborn marks. These will usually lose some of their colour when dry cleaned, but the stain will still remain. In contrast, steam cleaning is excellent at treating even the oldest and toughest of stains. If you need old carpets to look new, steam cleaning is probably the way to go.

2. Gets Down Deeper

Another drawback of dry cleaning is that the powder will not penetrate very far, so it's only good at attacking surface stains and dirt. In contrast, steam cleaning will penetrate right through to the bottom of your carpet, so it provides a far more thorough clean. This is great for any carpet, but it's especially beneficial for those carpets with deep or thick piles.

3. Leaves No Residue

In some cases, it can be tough to pull up all of the powder used during dry cleaning, and the remaining residue can cause allergies. It can also fall deeper into the carpet over time, which means it will start to rub against fibres and potentially cause premature wear. With steam cleaning, this isn't an issue. While you will have to wait a few hours for the carpet to completely dry, there's no chance of residue being left over.

4. Better at Dealing with Pests

Sometimes carpets are professionally cleaned because homeowners are concerned about dust mites and other pests. If this is the case, steam cleaning should prove more attractive than dry cleaning. This is partly because steam cleaning tends to penetrate deeper into carpets, but it also helps that the extreme heat involved will kill most pests and their eggs on contact.
